Software Applications

Red Wolf Associates has experience with and the capability to apply the following software tools for energy assessments:

  • eQuest/DOE2

GOTHIC

GOTHIC is a general purpose thermal-hydraulic software package originally created for use in safety analysis for the nuclear power industry. As such, it has a nuclear-level quality assurance pedigree behind the development, testing, and validation of the code. Over the past 25 years of development, the code's capabilities have expanded to allow it to be used for a wide variety of applications.

Example GOTHIC Schematic

The following are some of the benefits and features of using GOTHIC for detailed analysis.

  • Underlying mathematical models are based on first principles and not just rules of thumb
  • Allows multi-phase, multi-component flow situations
  • The software is not a "canned" program like other traditional, rigid analysis tools
  • The program is very flexible and can be used to model a wide range of thermal-fluid situations
  • Includes capabilities to model the following components in detail
    • Fans
    • Pumps
    • Heat Exchangers & Cooling Coils
    • Thermal Storage Media (walls, equipment, etc.)
    • Ice Storage

MotorMaster+

MotorMaster+ is a software package used to assist engineers with selecting the optimal motor for a specific application based on site-specific energy costs. It also helps with decisions regarding the potential repair or replacement of a given motor based on criteria such as motor age, size, energy cost, depreciation, etc.

AIRMaster+

AIRMaster+ models supply-side compressed air systems for identifying potential energy and cost saving measures. The software includes databases of generic compressors or user provided data can be used to model in-plant air compressors. Energy savings measures such as reducing air leaks, reducing system pressure, adding receivers, and using unloading controls can be evaluated with AIRMaster+.

Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT)

The SSAT program allows engineers to develop basic models of steam systems. The effect of multiple energy conserving modifications to the steam system can be evaluated to determine the energy and cost savings.

Fan System Assessment Tool (FSAT)

The FSAT program is used to evaluate the efficiency of fan system configurations. Modifications to the fan, motor, or system can be assessed to determine the potential energy and cost savings associated with the change.

Chilled Water System Assessment Tool (CWSAT)

The CWSAT software evaluates the energy requirements of a chilled water system and assesses potential savings opportunities that may exist including:

  • Changing refrigerants
  • Using cooling tower only when conditions allow
  • Increasing chilled water temperature setpoint
  • Cooling tower fan modifications

WATERGY

WATERGY is an Excel-based program for assessing water conservation measures. It evaluates the water, energy, and cost savings associated with various conservation opportunities including low flow toilets, shower heads, efficient dishwashers and washing machines, boiler blowdown, and landscape irrigation, among others.

3E Plus

3E Plus is a software application for optimizing insulation applied to pipes, ducts, and tanks. The energy and cost savings associated with specific types of insulation, insulation thickness, and jacket materials can be determined and optimized based on the facility's energy costs.

ParaSol

ParaSol is a software package for evaluating energy requirements and peak heating and cooling loads for rooms with various window coverings, internal and external sunshades, and glazings. Additionally, the program accounts for wall, floor, and ceiling thermal conductivity and inertia for evaluating the heating/cooling loads.
